In May 1989, the eight-story trauma center at the University of Maryland was renamed the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in recognition of his groundbreaking work. This state-of-the-art facility continues his mission of providing the highest level of trauma care while advancing research and education.
In 1986, at Dr. Cowley's request and with support from Maryland Senator Mathias, President Ronald Reagan signed legislation establishing the National Study Center for Trauma and Emergency Medical Services. Dr. Cowley was appointed as its founder and first director.
Throughout his career, Dr. Cowley received numerous awards and honors. These included the Congressional Certificate of Merit from the United States Congress, multiple military awards, and recognition from state and national organizations. After his death, bills were introduced in both the U.S. House and Senate to award him the Congressional Gold Medal for his lifelong commitment to advancing trauma care.
